美国语言学家Whorf于1941年首次使用“对比语言学”这个名词，之后逐渐形成了“对比语言学”的传统定义，即：研究不同语言之间共时对比的语言学。五十年代初至六十年代中期在美国得到了蓬勃发展。六十年代后期，应用语言学和语言教学受认知心理语言学的影响，逐渐转向对语言习得过程的研究，因此七十年代以后，错误分析在很大程度上取代了对比分析并在欧洲得到了很大的发展。
