Throughout England, politicians, parents and pundits worry that the industriousness and discipline of kids in the East are leaving relatively relaxed Westerners trailing behind. Though there is some debate surrounding the statistics.
In this era of rapid social and educational change, education system becomes more and more important for citizens to develop their basic skills, mental values, capacity of intelligence, and individual emotions. Part of the problems is that different groups in the society have different expectations for the growing children. Some feel that students should be taught intelligence such as the capacity of reasoning and logical thinking; others believe that schools and parents should instill their children with the exploration of their own emotions. That is to say, in fact, modern students should accept not only the method of solving knowledge problems but also the ability to manipulate the emotions of their own as well as others.

As we all know, it is the purpose of education to help people become autonomous, creative, and inquiring people who have the will and intelligence to serve the society and create their own destiny. For example, American schools are very enthusiastic about teaching “life skills”-logical thinking, reasoning, analysis and creative problem solving. The actual content of lessons is secondary to the process, which help to train students to be able to handle whatever life may presents, including all the unknowns of the future. To the contrast, however, in many Asian nations, schools emphasize the education is to train their students to become passive receptacle to absorb knowledge, which make children feel dull and mechanical to learn, which ignore the real purpose of education. More often than not, it is the goal of education to replace one’s empty mind with an open one. In this respect, teaching the capacity of logical thinking and reasoning is primary for children to develop their own natural identity.

To contrast, however, the current educational systems emphasize too much to cultivate students’ capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but fail to consider the problems of their emotion world. Especially, their psychological processes are ignored by teachers, parents, society as well as themselves, which make them become hard to apt to the rapid change of the society. On one hand, students find themselves coming under intense pressure and being offered many incentives to compete in classroom and pit against other peers around them. In this case, they may meet great problems of the development of their psychology-mental withdrawing, interrupting, and alone feeling, etc. on the other hand, with the existing of those emotional problems, students may find it is impossible to communicate with others, and thus they would involve themselves into chat or game on net, which may evoke some social problems: hating reality, suicide, and drug use. Therefore, the education should not only be concerned of the emotional world of children but also conduce them to a circumstance of psychological health.

In fact, it is widely believed that, in one way, EQ is more important than IQ to facilitate the development of citizens. For example, most successful people contribute their achievement to the strong mind, the spirit of never saying give up, and hard working. It is true that intelligent is the basic architecture of life, but the emotion of the people is the ornamentation and decoration in their perspective life.

To conclude, we must realize the effect of intelligent and emotional aspects in educational systems. In this way, we can train the growing children to be ambitious, and intelligent individuals to their daily life and social actions.
