这是一个主从复合句. "a philosopher once wanted to know" 是主句,
"whether he was alive or not" 是从句.
A,不定冠词.philosopher,名词.a philosopher 是主句中的主语.wanted,
及物动词want的过去时态,在主句中当谓语.to know,是动词know的不定式,在主句中当谓语动词wanted的宾语.once,是副词,在句中作时间状语,修饰谓语wanted.
在从句中,代词he(代替主句中的philosopher),是从句中的主语.was,是系动词be的过去时态(单数,第一,三人称).alive,是形容词,与was一起是从句中的表语.or,是连词.not,是副词,其后省略了alive,与was合起来也是表语.
整个从句由关连词wether引导作为非限定式动词 to know 的宾语.所以,这个从句在整句中的地位仍然是个宾语从句.
有人认为 wanted to know 是全句的"谓语",这在英语语法上是错误的.
