Nexium contains the medicine esomeprazole. Esomeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that works by blocking a particular molecule in a type of cell in the stomach, so reducing the amount of stomach acid produced. It is the first PPI to demonstrate superiority in relieving patients symptoms and healing their oesophagitis overother PPI\'s.

Nexium is used to treat a wide range of patients, including both the newly diagnosed and patients switched from other therapies such as Losec, other PPIs and H2 receptor antagonists.

Nexium is supplied as tablets which should be swallowed whole with liquid. It is important that medication should not be stopped except on your doctor\'s advice.

Nexium is used to treat the following diseases:

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) where acid from the stomach escapes into the gullet causing inflammation and heartburn (a burning feeling rising from the stomach or lower chest up towards the neck)
Ulcers in the stomach or upper part of the intestine associated with infection by the bacterium \"Helicobacter pylori\", treated by a combination of esomeprazole and antibiotics
Nexium 40 mg powder for solution for injection/infusion is indicated for gastroesophageal reflux disease as an alternative to oral therapy in patients when oral therapy is not appropriate.
