family 指包括父母，姐妹等家庭成员的一家人。household 指同住在一所房子里的人（家人，房客等）
两者都是指家庭。
Household却用于指家户或家庭单位，如household survey，household也用于指与家庭有关的，如household appliances，还有家喻户晓的意思。
总之，household是比较客观性的，而family是比较亲切的。
family:
A fundamental social group in society typically consisting of a man and woman and their offspring.
家庭：社会中最基本的群居组织，典型地由男人、女人和他们的后代组成
househould:
A domestic unit consisting of the members of a family who live together along with nonrelatives such as servants.
家庭：由住在一起的家庭成员及其他非亲属（如仆人）所组成的家庭单位
