翻译：戌子这一日，皇上（唐太宗）对陪立两旁的大臣说：“我读了《隋炀帝集》这部书，发现文章的辞藻深奥渊博，也知道是肯定尧、舜而否定桀、纣的，但是做起事来为什么又相反了呢？”大臣魏征答道：“百姓的君主虽然都是贤哲圣明，但也应当虚心接受别人的劝谏，这样才能使有智慧的人贡献他的才能。勇敢的人竭尽他的全力。隋炀帝这个人，却是依仗他的地位，狂妄自大，刚愎自用，所以尽管他嘴里说的是尧舜之美德，干的却是桀纣的行为。他没有自知之明，结果遭到覆亡的下场。”皇上听了，深有感触地说道：“前人的教训离我们不算远啊，应当引为借鉴。”
