A guard standing six feet tall, Allen Iverson played two years of college basketball for Georgetown University before being drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996. He soon became their leading scorer, earning the nickname "The Answer." By 1999 he was the leading scorer in the NBA, averaging 26.8 points per game. In 2000 he released a CD of rap music (under the name Jewelz), whose coarse "street" lyrics created a minor controversy (for which Iverson eventually apologized). He was named Big East defensive and player of the year and also gained national garner by making the First Team All-America. Feeling like he had no more to accomplish, Iverson decided to take off his Hoyas jersey as a sophomore and head to the courts of the NBA. Iverson was selected as the number one draft pick overall by the Philadelphia 76ers, making him the first point guard to be selected first overall since Magic Johnson. His impact in the league was felt instantly. Iverson lived up to his lofty expectations averaging 23.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 2.07 steals en route to taking the 1996-97 rookie of the year award. At one point during his inaugural season Iverson scored 40 points of more in five consecutive games and hit his career high of 50 against Cleveland. During his second year of NBA tenure Iverson lead his team in scoring, assists, FGM, FGA, 3 pointers made, attempted, FTM, FTA, steals, and minutes played. All players have their doubters and Iverson was no different. The media and many veteran players continued to say that Allen had no respect for the game and was selfish. Iverson kept his rebuttal to the court however, accumulating an amazing highlight reel of fancy passes, drives, and dunks. His most deadly weapon being his crossover dribble that has even taken Michael Jordan to school. In his third season, Iverson has now moved to more of a shooting guard role where he has relished, becoming the leagues leading scorer at 26.8 points a contest. He also gained individual honors including 1998-99 All NBA First Team and all-star team. Along with the individual success, Iverson lead the 76ers to the playoffs for the first time in many years. July 15, 2006 - The Allen Iverson All-Stars won this year’s Allen Iverson Celebrity Softball Classic, defeating the WPGC All-Stars, 7-3, at Prince George’s Stadium Saturday evening. Recording artist Nelly slammed a solo home run in the top of the first, helping the A.I. squad to an early 2-0 lead. With a hit in the top of the fourth, Allen Iverson helped his team extend their lead to 5-2. They eventually went on to win 7-3.

8,445 fans packed Prince George’s Stadium and ticket proceeds went to Iverson’s Crossover Foundation. Among the stars who came out were Kansas City Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, Stephen Jackson of the Indiana Pacers, 112, Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson, cornerback DeAngelo Hall of the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers’ tight end Vernon Davis and Marques Hagans of the St. Louis Rams. Iverson ended the evening’s festivities by thanking the crowd for coming out and helping a good cause.
