But it is also one of the world's most endangered tropical forests.
In many areas over 95% of the natural forest has been lost, and as a result many of the forest's unique species are now at risk of extinction.
Please take action and help protect the forest for future generations.
But it isn't all bad news. In 2004 Paraguay brought into force a Zero Deforestation Law, which prohibits the conversion of native forests. This has been spectacularly successful, reducing deforestation by more than 85%
This represents a great beginning for forest conservation in the country and the government should be congratulated for this spectacular achievement.
Yet, in December this year, the Zero Deforestation Law is due to expire. Pressure is already mounting especially from the farming lobby and loggers not to extend it. If this happens then all of the conservation that has been accomplished will be put at risk.
