Some efforts have been made in this direction using Structural Equation Modelling (Schmidt and Moust, 1995), however, these analyses are usually conducted on corrrelational data derived from an intact curriculum.What is required is a marriage of these sophisticated multivariate analytical approaches with some of the canons of good experimental design.
I did not intend to elaborate on research designs. But if the goal of the BEME movement is to provide recommendations on methods of education with high likelihood of success, we should, as a minimum, be able to predict what happens to students. Perhaps we should be more modest in our outcome expectations. What do we expect from effective medical education, i.e. teaching that really serves its purpose? A better world? Better patients? Better doctors? Better student grades?Or should we start to expect better learning behavior in students?
