Third planet out from the sun, our Earth looks from a distance like a great round blue jewel hanging in the darkness of space. It is blue because three-quarters of its rocky surface is drowned under blue ocean waters which shimmer in the light of the sun. No other planet has this much water on its surface. Here and there, its rocky surface pokes up above the water to form half a dozen large continents and thousands of smaller islands. The very ends of the world are glistening white – the permanent polar ice caps.

The moon is the biggest, brightest object in the night sky. It seems to shine almost like a pale sun. But if does not give out any light itself. It is just a big, cold ball of rock and shines only because it reflects sunlight. The Moon is the Earth’s companion in space, and circles round it continuously, just as the earth circles the sun. The Moon is about a quarter of the Earth’s size and was probably formed shortly after the earth , perhaps from hot splashes flung out as a small planet collided with the earth.
