The interaction between the computer vision and robot vision communities is not as strong as one could expect. The main results in the computer vision community are published at conferences, such as ECCV, ICCV and CVPR as opposed to ICRA and IROS in robotics. In addition, the communities have different archival journals, such as IEEE PAMI, IEEE TRA, Robotics and Autonomous Systems and International Journal of Robotics Research. Exciting results are emerging in both of the communities and there is a need for stronger cross fertilization between them. Consequently, to address this need a workshop was organized at IROS 2004 in Sendai. The papers in the present volume originate from that workshop in extended versions.
