“I found my first job at nine,” Lee-Hom once recalled. “My parents encouraged me to earn pocket-money myself, so I got up at 5:00 every morning to deliver newspapers… My salary was not much. I got about 30 US dollars monthly, and I did this job for eight years. It wasn’t easy: whenever it snowed, I had to walk door to door in cold weather and took the risk of being chased by dogs.”

How did he spend his salary? He bought himself a tape-recorder, a violin a jazz drum and a lot of ice-cream.

Lee-Hom is an ABC. He was born in New York and spent seventeen years there.

After he came back to Taiwan, his American friends began to regard him as Chinese; but in the eyes of his Chinese friends, he is still an American. Lee-hom felt puzzled（困惑）. In 2000, he expressed his proudness of being Chinese in his song “Heir to the Dragon”.

“The first Chinese song I learnt was its original version . It was sung by my uncle 20 years ago. I was born in the year of dragon and this year was also the year of dragon, so I remade it,” said Lee-Hom in 2000.

Since then, this song has become Lee-Hom’s business card And people recognize him as a patriotic Chinese.
