Jenkins was a jeweler (珠宝商) who had made a large diamond (钻石) ring (戒指) worth $5700 for the Silkstone Jewelry Shop. When it was ready, he made a copy of it which accepted it without a question. Jenkins gave the much more valuable (有价值的) ring to his wife for her fortieth birthday. Then, the husband and wife flew to Paris for a weekend. As to the wife for her fortieth birthday. Six months later the buyer brought it back to Silkstone’s Office .”It’s a faulty (假的) diamond ,”he said .”It isn’t worth the high price I paid.” Then he told them the facts .His wife’s car had caught fire in an accident. She had escaped(逃跑)，but the ring had fallen off and been damaged in the great heat of fire. The shop had to agree . They knew that no fire on earth could even damage a perfect diamond. Someone had taken the real diamond and put a faulty one in its place. The question was : Who did it ? A picture of the ring appeared on the newspaper . A reader thought he saw the ring . The next day ,another picture appeared in the papers which showed a famous dancer walking out to a plane woman with the dancer there was a woman wearing a large diamond ring .” Do you know the woman with the lovely diamond ring ?” the papers asked their reader .Several months later ,Jenkins was sentenced (叛弄) to seven years in prison (监狱)。
