Lien Chan to visit mainland

CHAIRMAN of the Kuomintang (KMT) party, Lien Chan, will visit the mainland later this year.

Lien made the announcement Friday at a news conference in Tokyo for Japan-based reporters from Taiwan. Lien was in Japan for the 2005 Aichi Expo. Lien said he was pleased to accept the official invitation from the mainland.

KMT Vice Chairman Chiang Pin-kung said Friday that Lien would probably visit the mainland June 1 because KMT founder Sun Yat-sen’s body was buried in Nanjing on June 1, 1929.

Sun died in Beijing on March 12, 1929, but his body was moved to Nanjing on June 1. However, the exact time of the visit would be decided by Lien, said Chiang.

Chiang led a KMT delegation to visit the mainland from March 28 to April 1.

At a meeting with Chiang on Thursday, Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, invited Lien to visit the mainland on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and Hu Jintao.

Chiang described his mainland tour a “remembrance, business and bridge-building” visit. His delegation had completed all the tasks on the mainland journey smoothly, said Chiang on arrival at Taipei on Friday.

The KMT delegation’s visit had been successful and would have a positive impact on the promotion of cross-Straits economic exchanges and cooperation, and the peaceful, steady development of cross-Straits relations, said Chen Yunlin, director of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, on Thursday.
