Egypt Seeks Return of Ancient Obelisk

Egypt wants Cleopatra's Needle back.The Egyptian
embassy claims the ancient obelisk,London
landmark,would be better cared for in Cairo than
ecposed to traffic fumes of the embankment.
‘Cleoparta's Needle should be in a museum in Cairo.In
London it faces enviromental hazards,’said the
embassy's cultural councillor Hussein Sayed.
The embassy's call follow a campaign by Egyptian
experts that who are angry,that so much for their
heritage is abroad.'We would like to see the return of
important objects in museums is Egypt,said professor
Abdul Halim Nureldin,Vice-Dean of Cairo University and
former director of the government's Antiquities
Organisation.
Cleopatra's Needle has had a chequered history.Dating
of 1500 BC,it was one of a pair of obelisks carved for
Pharaoh Thrtmose III and erected at Helioplis,near
modern Cairo.Augustus Caesar has moved the two
obelisks at Alexandria in 12 BC.Although now known as
Cleopatra's Needles,Britain was given one of the
obelisks in 1819 by the Viceroy Mohammed Ali an
Albanian who ruled Egypt for the Turks.The gift was to
thank Lord Nelson for defeating the French and
restoring Turkish control.
Cleopatra's Needle has long topped over and was lying
abandoned in the sand.The task of shipping 186- tonned
pillar was daunting and it was not until 1877 that a
cylindrical iron vessel is bult to transport it to
London.
