I. Greetings and introduction (about 1 minute)

II. General conversation with the candidate (about 3 minutes)

Now, first of all I’d like to know something about you.

How did you get here today?
Are you working, or are you a student?
(If the candidate is a student, ask the following questions.)
What subjects are you studying at the moment?
What do you enjoy about? (One of the subjects named by the candidate)
What are you hoping to do after you leave school / college? Why?

Select one more question for the candidate.
Do you listen to or watch programs in English? What are they?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of education abroad for high school students?
What lessons do you think we can learn from the scourge of SARS?
How do you make the best of your free time?

III. Topic presentation and follow-up questions (about 4-5 minutes)
Now let’s talk about something you have prepared. You have about 2 minutes for your presentation.
What are you going to talk to me about? (What is your topic?)

(Ask the candidate to start his / her presentation.)
(Ask two or three follow-up question about his / her presentation, the discussion may last about 2 minutes.)

IV. Off –hand topic presentation and follow-up questions (about 3 minutes)
Now here are some other topics. Please choose one topic from them.
(Show the candidate 4 numbered cards all random order, and all face down, so that the information on them will not be seen, and ask him/ her to choose a card.)

Topic 4 Social Relations
What makes a good neighbor? Talk about the things that good neighbors do.

1. Tell me something about your neighborhood?
2. Could you tell me something about one of the best or worst neighbors you ever had?
3. Can you describe one of the strange neighbors you ever had?
4. What problems might arise if the new neighbors could not get along well?
