In ancient Greece the Olympic Games, held every four years, in honour of Zeus, finally became first a national and then international event. No one knows exactly how far back the Olympic Games go, but some official records date from 776 B.C.
The Games, after having lasted for almost 1,200 years, were stopped in 394 A.D.
It was over 1,500 years before there was another such international gathering. In 1896 the first small meeting took place in Athens. After the 1908 London Olympics, success was rebuilt and nations sent their best representatives. In times of peace, the Games have taken place ever since in four-yearly periods. In Munich(慕尼黑) in 1972, players from more than 120 countries were watched by huge crowds.
Nowadays, the Games are held in different countries in turn. The host country provides a stadium, swimming pools, hotels and many other services, but competing countries pay their own sportsmen’s expenses. The famous Olympic slogan is “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, and contests are still the main feature.
The Olympics start with the arrival in the stadium of a torch(火炬), lighted on Mount Olympus by the sun’s rays. It is carried by a group of runners to the stadium. The torch stands for the continuation of the ancient Greek Olympic spirits, and it burns throughout the Games until the closing ceremony. The well-known Olympic flag, however, is a modern work; the five interlocking rings coloured blue, yellow, black, green and red, on a white background, represent the five continents. At least one of these colours appears in the national flag of every country.
