there has been much debate for a number of years about how far scentists should be responsible to society for the results of their work. this question applies particularly to university scientists as they are the ones who are free to choose their field of reseach. The greater number of scientists today works for goverment sponsored bodies, or in industry; in their case, the responsibibility lies mainly with the authorities that emplor them; they are not entirely free agents, short of resigning form their post.
