people in Australia said that too, the sentence"i wnat to buy this one".
i think you went to a formal cloths shop,
Wealthy people goes there, and they sometimes have to use formal language.(that's my point of view)
People use different levels (formal, informal or colloquial etc) of language depends on who are the audiences.

可能是英国人说话的习惯问题
因为已经尝试了很多件,所以你可以说,想买的这件尺寸颜色等等比较合适
如果直接说:我买这件。---这种表达比较生硬
当然这种是中国人的表达习惯
